We’re at United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) — it’s bringing together governments and scientists to discuss climate change.

A number of designers and businesses are converging on these talks to discuss issues ranging from the possible effects of climate change on fashion and how the garment industry is dealing with it to the question of how fashion apparel can be produced in a low-carbon, sustainable way.

Take, for example, the perspective of Sebastian Suhl, senior vice president for sustainability at the world’s largest fashion company, VF Corp. Suhl is the company’s point person for sourcing sustainable clothes — and its de facto spokesperson.

“In terms of making sure our products can stay on the market longer and are less expensive, this is just something that has been a part of the last decade or so,” Suhl says.

“But even when we made this move, the fashion industry took a step back and looked at the long-term impact of this. It was clear that we had to support a range of suppliers. We had to be sure we were supporting garment workers everywhere. So these are more long-term considerations than short-term ones.”
