Emily Ratajkowski explains her idea of a perfect woman

Emily Ratajkowski, the 27-year-old British-American model, actress and activist who became famous on the internet after a nude photo she shared with a male friend was removed by Instagram in April, told Vanity Fair that her life was a “roller coaster” that, despite her usual positive outlook, “just kind of constantly tested [her].” During the 10-day period in January when the photo went viral, Ratajkowski appeared on every late-night show and news program as her story, which featured a rant about the dark history of sexual assault, consumed the internet. Though Ratajkowski did not brag about having Playboy cover in her eyes, she admitted that such celebrity status and public romance had made her persona nearly insufferable at times.

“I felt my body had become objectified, like it was more of a priority than my voice, my work, my mental health,” she said, recalling some of the emotional reactions she encountered from some of the men in her life as the photos of her spread across the internet. “So I was like, ‘If I’m such a bad girl, if I’m such a bitch, then maybe this isn’t a good use of my time and it’s not the best way for me to try to make a better world.’”

But while she considered leaving New York and moving back to Europe during that month-long moment of internet celebrity, in the end she returned to the U.S. with her family — who helped her realize that modeling was more fun than she’d realized. “It’s true; I wasn’t just famous; I was famously sexy,” she said, laughing. “It’s flattering; it’s exciting; it’s exhilarating; and I’ve experienced all these things that I didn’t anticipate.”
