Human trafficking victim speaks out as suspect appears in court in Canada

Twenty-nine-year-old Rupinder Sethi of Toronto faces two charges of human trafficking, two charges of sexual assault, forcible confinement and one charge of uttering death threats following an investigation by the Toronto Police Services Special Victims Unit.

Sethi, 34, of Toronto, appeared in court Tuesday in Vancouver and was remanded to a hospital in jail until a bail hearing. His next court appearance will be on Oct. 31.

The charges are related to an investigation involving a 30-year-old woman who police say was brought from B.C. to Toronto for sexual exploitation at the defendant’s direction.

“I am grateful for the great work done by our team to identify, apprehend and charge a prolific trafficker,” said Supt. Michael Babey, who is the lead investigator on the case, in a statement. “This is just one of many cases we will be working to solve during the coming months and, we expect more charges to be laid as the investigation continues.”

The investigation began in May, with the agency receiving a tip about a missing 30-year-old woman who had been known to show up on multiple escort websites throughout Canada.
