Toronto cop shoots suspect who was killed more than 6 hours later

A 35-year-old man is dead after he was shot in Brampton, Ontario.

Eddie Cortright was walking along Gale Drive around 6:30 p.m. on March 13, when he was shot multiple times.

More than six hours later, at about 10:30 p.m., he was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

That was the same night, according to police, that two officers in the Brampton Paramedic Service responded to a call of an unresponsive man who was suffering from gunshot wounds.

“When they arrived they located the male. He was transported by air ambulance to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased,” Const. Allyson Douglas-Cook said.

Detectives are following multiple witness leads and interviewing multiple people with information, Douglas-Cook said.

“There is an ongoing investigation,” she said. “The circumstances surrounding this are still being worked on and interviews are being conducted with witnesses.”

Police say they do not have information to determine what Cortright may have been doing before he was shot, but Douglas-Cook said that, at this point, “investigators have no specific suspects in mind.”

A motive is also still unknown and Douglas-Cook confirmed that the victim’s injuries appeared to be “significant.”

“We are not indicating what circumstances led to this, but we are leaving no stone unturned,” she said.
