(CNN) — Police in Colorado are investigating a shooting that left three people wounded in a school parking lot late Friday afternoon.
All three victims are expected to survive.
The shootings took place at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, north of Denver, and the suspect has been taken into custody, Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said at a press conference.
None of the three people injured are students at the school, Robinson said.
The gunman fled the scene, he said. Police have not released any more information on the suspect, except to say that he had a gun and does not appear to be a student at the school.
“My heartfelt prayers go out to those impacted by the shooting at Arapahoe High School today,” said Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, who was elected in 2013. “I encourage everyone in Denver to keep those affected in their thoughts and prayers and to stay safe.”
In a statement, Centennial Public Schools released a statement that said a “patrol officer and Denver police were already in the school’s parking lot at the time of the incident. Our public safety officials do a terrific job of quick and efficient responses that keep our kids safe.”
“We, too, are saddened for the families that are impacted by this senseless violence. We are thankful that everyone was able to get out of the school safely and we will help the families in any way we can to assist with their emotional needs.”
