Earth Environment and Climate Care Ambassadors (EECCA), an NGO on climate change has promised to partner with the Bayelsa State Government in tackling deforestation.
Tackling deforestation through planting of trees, the NGO noted is in line with its mandate to care for the environment by planting trees to mitigate the effect of climate change on humans as well as sensitize the citizens against indiscriminate cutting of trees.
Prof. Perekibina Bariweni who disclosed this while delivering a goodwill message on behalf of EECCA at the International Day of Forest with the theme ” Forest Restoration: A Pathway to Recovery and Wellbeing” described the forest as the lungs of the earth which help to remove pollutants in the environment.
Bariweni said the rich luxuriant forest Bayelsa is endowed with is gradually disappearing because of human activities, noting the about 30 to 70 percent of the trees have disappeared with its attendant effect on the health of humans.
He lauded the state government for the proactive steps being taken to reclaim the environment by planting trees, assurring of the support of the climate care ambassadors to help sensitize and create awareness on the need for Bayelsans to conserve our forest.
He said ” I am very happy to be what is happening here today. The forests are very much important, beyond just giving us oxygen and the removal of carbon dioxide, the trees we have also serve other useful purposes.
” Luckily for us in Bayelsa, we have an array of forests, unfortunately these are being taken away by human activities and it is not enough to say trees are disappearing. From the background of the academia, we can give a figure to what have been going on in our dear state. Up to between 30 to 70 percent of the trees have been shown to have disappeared, and these have implication for our health because trees are the lungs of the earth, they help to remove the so much pollutants that we have in our environment.
” I am very happy that the state government under your watch is now taking a positive action to ensuring that trees are planted for us to begin to reclaim our environment. For us in the Earth Environment and Climate Care Ambassadors, we are ready to partner with the State to ensure that the best is given to our people.”
