Ijaw youths under the auspices of the Movement for the Survival of Izon Ethnic Nationality in the Niger Delta, MOSIEND has vowed to continue with the planned lockdown of the region over the refusal of the FG to inaugurate a substantive board for the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC.
Recall that the umbrella body of Ijaw youths in the Niger Delta, the Ijaw Youths Council, IYC had given the FG one-month ultimatum to inaugurate a substantive board for the NDDC or risk total shutdown of the region at the expiration of the ultimatum beginning 12 midnight on 25th, May 2021.
But MOSIEND in a statement signed by its National Vice President, Comrade Thompson Fuoye in Warri, Delta State said MOSIEND is ready to take charge of the protest by converging in Yenagoa to take a stance.
Fuoye said despite the rumoured kidnapp of the IYC President 24 hours to the planned protest MOSIEND as an organ of Council is prepared to go ahead with the protest, saying that the resolution taken by the IYC at the national expanded executive and stakeholders meeting in Port Harcourt is binding on all organization in Niger Delta.
He stated that it is insulting and laughable to hear that the President of IYC is kidnapped, adding that it is disappointed that a resolution taken by Ijaw people is being treated with levity.
He noted henceforth MOSIEND will not take any statement emanating from the the IYC seriously, insisting that it will no longer allow Ijaw Nation to be ridiculed by persons who do not have the interest of the people at heart.
” That we support the resolution reached by the IYC on the ultimatum given to the FG, whereas we know that the shutdown will bring hardship to our people, but because it is a protest that will on the long run bring happiness to our people if the board is constituted we are in total support of the protest.
” But for the current happening concerning the protest against the NDDC board, we are highly disappointed, we find it demeaning and insulting to hear that the president of IYC has been kidnapped. As MOSIEND, we say enough of these people who does not want to take the interest of Ijaw Nation seriously.
” We cannot at this level decide to take decision and it will be treated with mediocrity. That the president of IYC is kidnapped is unbelievable. You cannot have a protest that is suppose to happen in the next 24 hour and you are going to Abuja? Is the protest suppose to hold in Abuja?.
” For that reason, we have taken a stance that henceforth we are not going to take any statement from the IYC because we cannot allow the interest of Ijaw Nation to be abused by people who do not know what it takes to keep their people safe.
” MOSIEND wish to take charge of the protest and we have agreed to converge in Yenagoa tommorow and take a stance. Because this resolution is binding on all organization in Ijaw Nation, it is not an IYC thing. It is resolution reached by at a conference of all Ogbos in the Niger Delta. We strongly believe that there is a foul play by the IYC national executive because they do not have any business going to Abuja 24 hours to the planned protest,” the statement concluded.
