Frontline activist and Chairman Board of Trustees, Niger Delta Youth for Peace and Progress, Comrade Kennedy West, has said that sons and daughters of the region who are occupying political offices at the federal level have failed the people of the area.
West also accused political office holders from the region of high level of conspiracy to perpetually impoverish the region.
In an exclusive interview in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, he stated that the two offices that engages the youths of the area and restrains them from violence have been systematically shut down.
Going by the current happenings, the activist averred that the Niger Delta region is on the brink of imminent crisis, noting that region is sitting on a keg of gun powder which could explode anytime soon.
On the issue of the Amnesty office, he said:” there is a grand conspiracy to impoverish the region, it is sad that the universities where the youths are running lectures are now having online exams, but our youths can’t write because the institutions want their tuition fees paid, and the office can’t respond because of the frustration. Those engaged in one vocational work or the other are stranded because they can’t continue.
” I don’t really believe in the payment of monthly stipends, that is impoverishment and that is the collaboration. The region is sitting on a keg of gun powder, but for us who are preaching non violence we will still continue to plead; Government has come to say that only through force will they wake up. Those who are in government have failed us.
” On the current probe in the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, West noted ” look what is happening in the NDDC , but for us its not new, when the President gave him (Minister of Niger- Delta) the mandate to supervise the ministry, then the issue of forensic audit came, also the IMC, if the Minister had gone ahead to establish the board and the allow the forensic team work side by side with him, all of the issues would have been addressed in a transparent manner.
” Remember, the same Minister naming people was also a Senator at the period under review, If the likes of James Managers were mentioned, and since the Minister was part of the committee, then he can’t be the judge in his matter. The people suffering are the Niger-Delta people, look at the contracts running into billions been given to Aristocrat in the states where the blood of the people who sacrificed themselves for the region to get a better deals are not considered; then the federal government decided to give us a responding institutions but things are still worst.”
He stated that truoble is looming in the region which could spark a terrible crisis if not properly managed to ensure that peace prevails, “we are driving towards a crisis zone, look at the people that are not employed in the region, who are the contractors, the benefits, the openings that the contracts would have brought. All those involved in one way or the other in siphoning the people’s Commonwealth from the region should hand themselves over to the police, this is not a responsible government as long as Niger-Delta is concern, in the past 5-6 years we haven’t achieved anything.”
